THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA COMMEMORATES THE WEST NILE REGION PEACE ACCORD THE 2002 PEACE AGREEMENT
Our dear readers, please, be reminded or informed that, on Saturday the 12th of April, 2025, the Government commorated the West Nile region’s 2002 peace agreement signed between the Government and the UNRF II, with leaders highlighting the need to sustain: The event was organised under the theme, “Consolidating 23 years of peace and security in west Nile region for socio-economic transformation”.
The 2002 Peace Agreement, is being annually commemorated on the basis that, it ended decades of the armed conflict, and opened gates for reconciliation, stability, and socio-economic tranformation in West Nile Region of Northern Uganda.
It will remain being remembered that, the grant of Amnesty to Rebels of the Uganda National Rescue Front II, headed by Major General Ali Bamuze, was the other key point, that shaped the “Peace Accord” that triggered peace, and stability in west nile, and also fostered deeper cross boarder collaborations between the countries of Uganda, South Sudan, and DR Congo.
It should as well be pointed out that, since the signing of the PEACE AGREEMENT on the 24th day of December, 2002 with UNRF II, guns fell silent in the region, and there has been sustained peace, stability, and socio-economic transformation in the greater west nile sub region.
It was highlighted that, from Pakwack to Adjumani, west nile region has undergone a remarkable transformation, and development, since the 2002 Government of Uganda and Uganda National Rescue Front II, Peace Agreement signed at Yumbe Boma grounds.
That, 23 years of stability have facilitated infrastructural advancements, economic growth, and improved livelihood of people in the west nile region.
BASING ON THE DECEMBER 2002 PEACE AGREEMENT OR PEACE ACCORD WEST NILE REGION LOOKS AT A BRIGTHER FUTURE WITH A GREAT HOPE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW
During the Royal conference held recently, Crown Prince Swaleh Tibamwenda Basikania, the king in waiting made a very exciting remark. He logically remarked that;
The message on peace in the west nile region serves as a good lesson for armed political rebillions within the Rwenzori region.
It remains known that, the “Peace Accord” signed between the Government of the Republic of Uganda, and the Uganda National Rescue Front II marked a significant turning point in the socio-political history of the west nile region . That, the region, once played by armed conflicts and instability, is now thriving.
That, the Government’s commitment to rebuilding, and developing west nile region’s infrastructure has been instrumental in driving growth and progress. The region’s economy is now becoming, with new bussinesses sprouting up, and the existing ones expanding accordingly.
That, the peace divided has brought a sense of hope, and renewal to the people of west nile region. They are re-building their lives, re-uniting with their families, and looking towards a brighter future.
The impressive story of the west nile region is indeed a testament to the power of peace, and resilience.
It shows that, even in the darkest of times, there is always a hope for a better tomorrow.
As a good lesson to learn from, let the people of Rwenzori region, lean on amnesty granted to major General Ali Bamuze of UNRF II, 23 years ago, to reflecting on the first Amnesty granted to the seasoned, and hardened former rebel leader, Charles Kisembo Mumbere, 43 years in past time . please, pause, and ponder deeply.
