Welcome to the Obwami Bwa Bakonzo, the authentic cultural institution of the Bakonzo people, proudly rooted in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda. Established in 2008 and led by Crown Prince Swaleh Tibamwenda Basikania, we are dedicated to preserving the traditions, language, and values of over 900,000 Bakonzo. Crown Prince Swaleh Tibamwenda Basikania: A visionary leader and advocate for authentic Bakonzo identity, guiding the institution with wisdom and commitment to cultural integrity.

 Our Community

The Bakonzo are Bantu-speaking people with a deep connection to the Rwenzori region, sharing cultural ties with the Banande of DR Congo. We value unity, respect for our elders, and the teachings of our ancestors, living in harmony with neighboring tribes like the Bamba, Batuku, Basongora, Banyabindi, and Batwa.

We are the Bakonzo people, proud inhabitants of the Rwenzori Mountains, united under the Obwami Bwa Bakonzo cultural institution. Our identity is rooted in the Lhukonzo language, our ancient traditions, and a shared history of resilience. Led by Crown Prince Swaleh Tibamwenda Basikania, the King-in-Waiting, we are a community of over 900,000, dedicated to preserving our heritage and empowering future generations.

Key Milestones

1630 AD

Kinyabondo Tswogho founds the Basu-Banyangalha Dynasty, establishing the Obwami Bwa Bakonzo as a centralized kingship.

 

1974

Omwami George Basikania’s Rwenzururu Freedom Movement secures a separate Kasese District for the Bakonzo, with support from Presidents Idi Amin and Mobutu Sese Seko.

2008

Official recognition of Obwami Bwa Bakonzo as the cultural institution of the Bakonzo people.
